logoMagnolia grandiflora 'Goliath' At this lowest part of the garden the beds and borders are being given over to plants from the continents of North and South America. An understorey of bulbs, annuals, herbaceous perennials is planted through a mixture of trees and shrubs.

Such plants as Salvia, Penstemon, Gaillardia, Echinacea, Lupinus, Eryingium, Camassia and Sisyrinchium create a patchwork quilt through which the larger woody plants emerge.

There are many plants of interest that have been introduced to this area of the garden but it will take several years before this development creates the impact that such plants as Luma apiculata, Drimys winteri, Azara integrifolia, Crinodendron hookerianum and Lyonothamnus floribundus var. asplenifolius will make as they reach maturity. As in many parts of the garden the plantings here are somewhat experimental.

With such a wide variety of plants coming from the United States and temperate parts of South America there is a huge choice of plants, for this reason there will always be new additions to the Americas Collection on the Isle of Wight.
