 You
may access the South African Terraces from the balcony of the Visitor
Centre. These terraces were built with local stone on a steep south
facing rock outcrop. The incorporation of imported soil has enabled
the growing of a wide range of South African species.
The Isle of Wight's southerly location and the
high summer temperatures recorded on these terraces encourages
the flowering of these plants and has led to much experimentation
in our plantings. In
particular many pelargonium species have flourished here and
we are now trying various bulbous plants, particularly those
that come from areas of winter rainfall in South Africa.
Commonly grown plants of South Africa also are represented here,
thus Agapanthus, Diascia, Kniphofia, Osteospermum, Watsonia,
as well as Pelargonium feature prominently.
