Penstemon Slide Show
The penstemons will thrive in any well drained soil,
enjoying full sun although they will tolerate a little shade or
part day shade. They flower from June to October and it is
a good idea to remove spent flower spikes as this helps to extend
the flowering season. In the milder areas of the British
Isles these plants are more or less frost hardy and present no problems.
Where conditions are cooler a protective organic mulch is worthwhile.
Taking cuttings in September by way of precaution against winter
losses is advisable, most of the cultivars root readily and can
be potted up after about four weeks. Good ventilation is important
and the young plants can be hardened off outside once the danger
of frost is passed.
Some of the many varieties that we grow are shown
here, we regularly sell these and others to visitors at the Garden.
